Socially Responsible Investment in the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan: The Perspectives of Members
Thank you for considering participating in this research project. The purpose of the following is to provide you with information that you will need to understand this project and to decide whether or not you wish to participate.
The Title of this research project is “Socially Responsible Investment in a Pension Plan:The Perspectives of Members.” Essentially, this study will involve administering a web-based survey to investigate whether socially responsible investment (SRI) practices, defined as the consideration of environmental, social, and governance factors, are consistent with the will of plan members. The survey should take about 10-15 minutes to complete.
Participation is completely voluntary, and, should you decide to participate, you are free to withdraw your consent at any time during the survey. Should you have any concerns about the research, you may contact my supervisor, Dr. Quarter, at firstname.lastname@example.org, or the researcher, Mike Modeste, at email@example.com. In addition, you may contact the Office of Research Ethics at firstname.lastname@example.org about your rights as participants.
In order to be eligible to participate you must be a member of the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan; you must have not already completed this survey. Please note that this survey is circulating through various communication networks and you may have already received an invitation to participate.
The survey will be a questionnaire primarily composed of multiple choice questions with some open-ended questions. The survey will be done anonymously and all information will remain anonymous.
The use of a web-based survey guarantees participants’ anonymity, and no identifiable information will be gathered. Only the researcher and the thesis committee will have access to the raw data. The raw data will be stored electronically on a hard drive and on a USB under pasword protection; it will also be encrypted using TrueCrypt. I plan to keep the raw data for five years as it may be of use for a future study. You may choose to not answer any question.
As is clear from the foregoing, I will be taking measures to protect your confidentiality. Potential limitations in my ability to ensure your confidentiality and privacy are minimal.
While there will be no compensation, potential benefits which you might derive from participating are offering an opportunity to explore and reflect upon your attitudes with respect to investment practices taken by your pension plan. In addition, participating will give an opportunity to make your perspective known as relates to socially responsible investment and the OTPP.
Potential harm to you is minimal; however, you may be disappointed with the results of the research. The findings of this research may be used in a future study or publication. You will be able to access the final research report, when complete, through the University of Toronto Research Repository (T Space) at https://tspace.library.utoronto.ca/handle/1807/9944.
As mentioned, participation is voluntary and you are free to withdraw your consent by exiting the survey at any time during the survey. However, once you submit the survey you will not be able to withdraw your consent; since the survey is anonymous, there will be no way to connect you with your data.

If you choose not to participate, you may exit the survey by closing your browser.
Thanks very much.
